The Nuns Pool – West End

Swimming at the Nuns Pool in Bundoran offers a unique and serene experience, distinct from the bustling main beach. This secluded natural pool, nestled among the rocks, has a fascinating history dating back to the early 20th century. It was named after the nearby convent, where nuns would come to swim in privacy, away from the public eye. Over the years, the Nuns Pool has retained its tranquil charm, providing a sheltered spot for swimmers looking for a peaceful retreat. The clear, calm waters of the pool, combined with its historical significance and picturesque setting, make it a beloved spot for those seeking a quiet and reflective swim in Bundoran.

It would be a normal occurrence to see people at first light taking a morning dip.  

Remember that at High Tide the pool gets filled by the ocean with fresh ocean water.

The Nuns Pool has been enjoyed for generations.

Locals and tourists alike have been using the pool for generations.  Here is an old postcard for the early 1900s presumably (date unknown).

Insider Tips for Swimmers in Bundoran:

  • Tullan Strand is a NON-Swimming Beach.  It is fine for surfing only.

  • Check Tides and Weather: Always check the tide times and weather conditions before heading out, especially if you plan to swim in open water.  
  • Stay Safe: Be aware of rip currents and always swim within your ability. When in doubt, stick to the beaches with lifeguards on duty.
  • Local Knowledge: Chat with the locals—they’re often more than willing to share their favorite swimming spots and insider tips.

The Thrupenny Pool

Located along Atlantic Way drive just in front of Water World you’ll find the beautiful Thrupenny Pool hiding in plain site right in the centre of town. This natural rock pool is sheltered from the strong waves, providing a safe and calm swimming environment. It’s a wonderful spot for a family swim or for those who prefer swimming in a pool over the open water.  This pool is also great for doing lengths as its a long pool and deep enough for training style swimming.  It can get busy on hot summer days.   From here too, you’ll see surfers paddling out to the waves at the Peak.   Find a spot there are two little beaches here, one right in to the ocean and the other beside the pool..
